What Comprises a Professional Surf Experience?
Surfing appears easy to do, right? All you do is paddle out, duck under the waves and then ride down the face of the wave doing a few cut backs and bottom turns. If you had tried to rent a board and simply had a go, you would find out how this real surf experience appears to be somewhat different.
In the 1920s, surfing was revived when a Hawaiian swimmer Duke Kahanamoku founded the first surfing club in Waikiki. Professional surfing competition was extremely popular during the 1960s and it brought with it the best surf experience anyone can ever have. The main organizing body for professional surfing now is the Association of Surf Professionals or ASP, which has 5 regional organizations. A few surfers who are pro earn about $200,000 or more in a year from competitions but most of the top pro surfers earn about $20,000 every year. Top pros can earn more than $750,000 for a lifetime from competitions alone. More earnings can come from product endorsements and lessons.
So what does it take to become a professional surfer and live the best surf experience ever while earning money at the same time? Here are some instructions:
1. Buy Your Own surf clothes and at least one surfboard for you to start with. But you will perhaps not have much success without the main element in the mix: great ocean waves. So it is obvious that it would be much help if you live near the ocean. You also need to be in good physical shape.
2. Offering lessons is one of the side incomes for surfing teaching professionals, who often offer lessons to new surfers. It can be a great expense but it is definitely worth investing if you intend to compete professionally. It demands a lot of practice for you to become a surfer and it includes no short cuts. You can find veteran surfers who offer lessons when you hang out in surf shops like the 2 Mile Surf Shop located in Bolina, California. Nick Kreiger is the shop's program director.
3. Competing in surfing events at the semi-professional level is your next step. Get ready for traveling to other destinations to join events. You are to gain valuable surf experience if you join in some competitions and practice on your own.
4. Joining the ASP is relatively simple for qualified surfers. You'll have to apply and pay the membership fees. The ASP World Tour is however only for an elite group of surfing professionals who dominate this sport. Female surfers are able to compete too.
5. Travel around the world to compete in ASP events and also the ASP World Tour.
6. Endorsing surfing products and offering surfing lessons can supplement your income once you've "made it."
